Just inside the Great Wall of China, not far from Beijing, a team of professional snowboarders, dubbed “Mellow Parks”, are pioneering the sport of snowboarding in the Middle Kingdom. CherryPow caught up with one of core members, Olli Fenwick-Ross, to find out more.

Below is a teaser from Mellowparks.cn called “Happy Niu Year”, the first Chinese snowboard movie shot in HD – hitting the world December 2009.
According to the Vimeo summary the video was “shot primarily in Beijing’s Quiksilver Nanshan Mellow Park, the movie is the sequel to last year’s snowboarding flick “Niu Beesness”. Luckily for the public we were forced to abandon our initial plan of venturing into the erotic films industry due to legal issues…and decided to put together Happy Niu Year instead.”
In case you’re wondering Niu stands for Ox – and 2009 is the year of the Ox. It’s a play on words, as it sounds like ‘new’ – well sort of, anyway.
Happy Niu Year features riding from the Mellowparks.cn Crew, Quiksilver China Snowboard Team, and friends.
Now for the good news: The DVD will be free to the public. Included in the DVD is the Nitro Roadwarriors’ 2009 movie, the 7th Nanshan Open (Nanshan is a resort in China), a best-of roundup, and a trip to New Zealand. All in all that’s more than 100 minutes of free content. As the Chinese would say, Hen Hao. As the Kiwis would say, Sweet as, bro!
In China you can get your copy from December at any Quiksilver, Nordica or Nitro store, stockists of 9010, Neff, and Skullcandy, or through 1626, CityWeekend and Speed Snowboard magazines. Not in China? No problem! Happy 牛 Year will also be available free to download from Mellowparks.cn!

Yep, there’s skiing in China but its a fairly small scene right now. While the snow at the current resorts may not be as reputable as that in Japan, they do have ice biking. Here’s a quick video from the guys who run www.snowboardermag.com.au.
