Australian snow fields hit with fresh dumps

It looks like winter is shaping up nicely for Australian skiers and snowboarders this season with roughly half a foot of fresh snow covering most resorts overnight.

Almost all of the major resorts in NSW and Victoria were reporting overnight snowfall of at least 13cm making for a great base and continued snow making operations. Temperatures are staying cool with most resorts reporting temperatures below 0 degrees celsius (that’s below 32 on the F scale).

Perisher sees 70cm of new snow

It’s not often Australia has dumps of more than 70cm (that’s more than 2 feet) in the space of a week, but this week Mother Nature has been kind to Perisher ski resort in New South Wales.

The resort has seen an abundance of white fluffy stuff in the past week and the weather seems to indicate it will keep coming. Due to recent snowfalls Perisher opened 40 lifts for the weekend. Some of the resort’s favourite areas due to open this weekend include: all of Guthega; Excelerator and the Ridge Quad Chair in Blue Cow; Eyre and Sun Valley T-Bars on Mt Perisher. Access to and from Blue Cow will be via the Interceptor Quad Chair and Pleasant Valley Quad Chair.

Plus, weather forecasters are calling scattered snowfalls above 1300m over the next few days.

Perisher kicks off season with 21cm of fresh

Perisher received 21cm of fresh snow in the village overnight and across the four mountain areas, allowing top to bottom skiing and snowboarding on the opening weekend.

According to the mountain resort, light snow flurries began to settle in the resort throughout Sunday prompting the resort’s Operations Department to fire up 95 snow guns across parts of Perisher Valley and Blue Cow Mountain to add to the growing base.

The new snow allowed the opening of Australia’s 8-seat chairlift to make its debut over the weekend.

For the long weekend, Perisher was the only Australian ski resort to have lifts in operation.

“It has been a fantastic start to the season. Not only did we have a great selection of acts preform at the Snowy Mountains of Music festival but we’ve also had fresh snowfalls,” commented Nathan Butterworth Perisher’s Resort Services Manager.

Adding to the snow was the Snowy Mountains of Music Festival which kicked-off on Saturday 6 with bands such as The Audreys and rock-star Tex Perkins performing.
